NOTES |
Robert was born in Ireland in 1723, coming to America in 1736 as a stowaway on a boat from Belfast to Philadelphia. Family legend has it that
he was caught when he came out for food and water, and upon arrival in Phildelphia, the captain sold him into indentured servitute to pay for
his passage. There is an excellent book by descendant Edward U. Smith, first published in a run of 500 copies by the Williamsport Printing and Binding Company in 1924, titled The Genealogy of the Descendants of Robert Smith. The book was reprinted by Polyanthos Press, Inc. of Cottonport, Louisiana (1971) by the Robert Smith Family Association, and is available through various dealers online. While it primarily concentrates on the descendants through Roberts son, Robert II, it is nevertheless, a valuable source of information for any of the descendants of Robert I. |
