NOTES |
The initial G. stands for Girty. His name is listed variously as G. Sheridan and Sheridan G.,
although he simply went by Sheridan. He was a Private in Company C of the 18th Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry during the
Spanish-American War, (May 7, 1898Oct. 22, 1898), but also registered for the draft during WWI. His headstone has his year of birth as
1875, but other official documents have his birth listed as 29 November, 1876. This error comes from the veterans burial application form,
which lists his year of birth as 1875. Millvinas father, Jacob, was born in France and immigrated with his parents (Michel and Margaretta)
in 1836. Jacob was a farmer. After WWII, Millvina and Sheridan donated some clothing to the Red Cross for distribution in Europe. A man working for the Red Cross in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) named Johannes Bazen received two heavy winter coats for himself and his wife, Jannetje. In one of the coats they discovered a note from Millvina and Sheridan asking if the coat made it into good hands. The couples began corresponding, and when Johannes and Jannetje informed the Jamisons that they were expecting, the Jamisons asked if they could name the baby after one of them, as they had no children of their own. As it turned out, Jannetje gave birth to twin girls, whom they named Millvina and Sheridan. |
